According to the World Health Organization (WHO), respiratory tract infections are among the most important human health problems because of their high incidence and consequent economic costs. The number of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) episodes (6 to 8) per child per year is similar in both developed and developing countries. The majority of respiratory infections are confined to the upper respiratory tract and most of these are simple coughs or colds.

Clinical trials were conducted on the symptoms of the following illnesses

Acute Bronchitis

Efficacy and safety of an extract of Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630) in adults with acute bronchitis

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/10708334_Efficacy_and_safety_of_an_extract_of_Pelargonium_sidoides_EPs_7630_in_adults_with_acute_bronchitis.

The duration of illness was significantly shorter for patients treated with the extract compared to placebo. The group that had Pelargonium extract treatment was superior in efficacy compared to placebo in the treatment of adults with acute bronchitis. Treatment with Pelargonium extract clearly reduced the severity of symptoms and shortened the duration of working inability for nearly 2 days.

Treatment of acute bronchitis with liquid herbal drug preparation from Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre study

There were marked improvements in the individual symptoms, which are the components of BSS - cough, chest pain on coughing, sputum, rales/rhonchi and dyspnoea - in the treatment group, relative to placebo. Patient satisfaction was very good.  It was found that Pelargonium extract is a well-tolerated and effective treatment for acute bronchitis in adults outside the very restricted indication for an antibiotic therapy.

Health-related quality of life improved more in patients treated with Pelargonium extract compared with placebo-treated patients. Pelargonium extract was superior in efficacy compared with placebo in the treatment of adults with acute bronchitis. It may therefore offer an effective alternative for acute bronchitis unless antibiotics are clearly indicated

Acute Sinusitus & Common Cold

The results of clinical studies performed with Pelargonium extract in acute sinusitis and in common cold are summarised in Table 2 below.

Efficacy and Tolerability of High-dose Pelargonium Extract in Patients With the Common Cold

After 10 days 63.5% of the group that received Pelargonium extract treatment were clinically cured versus 11.8% in the placebo group. The duration of inability to work was significantly lower in the treated group than in the placebo group.

Tonsillopharyngitis

Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Liquid Pelargonium sidoides Preparation (EPs 7630) in Children with Acute Non-Streptococcal Tonsillopharyngitis

The authors concluded that treatment with EPs 7630 reduced not only the severity of symptoms, but also shortened the duration of illness by at least 2 days.
